Nino Brown: The Road to Rikers, Part 2

On Saturday night, Lil Wayne and DJ Scoob Doo sent in a video clip featuring footage they shot that afternoon. Among other things, Wayne said it was time to party before he begins his expected one-year prison term at New York’s Rikers Island.

But in fact he was doing the exact opposite. Wayne was back at work, filming several more music videos before his sentencing on gun charges on Tuesday.

“I’m shooting seven videos today,” Wayne said in an exclusive new clip, shot in his trailer on the Miami video set.

One of the videos of the night was for the Rebirth track “Runnin’.”

“I’mma show y’all the [work] ethic of a true artist,” Wayne says in the clip. “You know what I’m talkin’ about? Seven videos. I shot 10 in two days before. Now we about to do seven in one night. ['Runnin' '] was one. Next we about to do Drake’s song called ‘Afrika Boombatta.’ ”

The New Orleans Fireman then began mulling over his wardrobe for Drake’s shoot. He was deciding between one of his brand-new tees promoting his Twitter account, @liltunechi, or a funky interpretation of deceased legend Marilyn Monroe.

“Gotta wear one of my @liltunechi shirts on there,” Wayne said. ” ‘Cause that song is a fun song. So I could wear that. Then again it’s Drake, so you might wanna get a little fly for his sh–.”

Wayne then pulled out a T-shirt featuring Monroe with tattoos all over her arm.

“Yeah, that’s stupid,” the Birdman Jr. said of the Monroe shirt. “I might have to rock that.”

This latest clip of Wayne starts with the acclaimed performer showing off all the BET Hip-Hop Awards in his house. Later he says he needs more VMAs.

“I got a house full of BET Awards,” Wayne said with a grin. “I got one MTV award. MTV, holla atcha boy now. I’m not gonna mess up your function. I’m just gonna come get my award, thank God, thank my ‘hood, thank my fam. I ain’t gotta perform.

“Give me an award for nothin’,” he continued with a chuckle. ” ‘The award for nothin’ goes to Lil Wayne.’ That’s all I need. MTV award for nothin’, man.”

Wayne and DJ Scoob Doo are also filming the reality DVD “The Nino Brown Story Part 3.” The first two installments are available at DJ Scoob Doo’s Web site.

Check back with MTV News for more of Wayne’s “Road to Rikers.”

Jennifer Lopez Spoofs ‘We Are The World,’ Olympics On ‘SNL’

J. Lo’s television blitz continues with ‘How I Met Your Mother’ cameo, rumored ‘Glee’ appearance.

Jennifer Lopez spoofs “We are the World” on SNL on Febuary 27

Jennifer Lopez might be between record labels, but her television appearances have been fast and frequent.

After filming an episode of CBS’ “How I Met Your Mother” last month, playing a sexy self-help guru who seduces Neil Patrick Harris’ character, Lopez hit “Saturday Night Live” for the first time in almost a decade.

“The first time I was on this show was 10 years ago. … Back then I was single and traveling around with a big entourage,” Lopez said, opening the show in a form-fitting black leather dress. “But people grow up; now I’m married with two beautiful children.”

The singer/actress went on to have an awkward conversation with comedian and “SNL” cast member Kenan Thompson, who was posing as a discarded member of her 1990s entourage, flanked by two drag queens wearing her infamous green barely-there dress and a denim bodysuit. All ended well as Thompson left the stage with the drag queens in tow and J. Lo began the show.

Another skit portrayed “We Are the World 3,” a spoof of the recent remake. Lopez played Rihanna, wearing a black and white Balmain-inspired leather jacket with gold hoops, hipster sunglasses and a blond cropped wig.

“There comes a time, eh!, when we heed a certain call, eh!” Lopez sang, poking fun at the “Rude Boy” singer.

In the next skit, Lopez was part of a Winter Olympics curling team. She played a confused Telemundo reporter covering the Winter Olympics in another.

“We don’t understand these, es loca!” said Lopez, wearing an orange blazer.

The strangest clip had to be a mock celebrity news interview in which Lopez was questioned by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, leading the Bronx native to scream “paciencia y fe” (”patience and faith”) like a madwoman before stomping out of view.

Lopez also performed two guiter-led songs including the Danja-produced, Wynter Gordon-written “Starting Over” from her forthcoming album, Love? Her LP is slated to hit stores this summer. Lopez still has not specified what label she has signed to, but Deadline Hollywood, the blog that originally broke the story of the Sony split, reported that she is in talks with Island Def Jam. Neither she nor her former label, Sony Records, has discussed what precipitated the split, but Deadline speculated that it might have been a response to the poor critical and commercial reception to the album’s first official single, “Louboutins,” which failed to light up the charts.

Lopez’s episode of “How I Met Your Mother” airs March 8, and she is rumored to be in talks for an appearance on the Golden Globe-winning show “Glee.”

Nino Brown: The Road to Rikers, Part 1

“Three days, y’all — let’s party!” Lil Wayne said on Saturday (February 27). Now that his dental surgery is done, Weezy is expected to begin serving his year in jail on weapons charges Tuesday, but he’s making sure he’s seen and heard before his departure. Of late, Weezy has taken to Twitter (much more on than in a minute) and Ustream to communicate with fans. On Saturday evening, Weezy and his favorite videographer, DJ Scoob Doo, sent MTV News a clip we’re going to call “Nino Brown: The Road to Rikers, Part 1″ (as in Rikers Island, the New York jail that Wayne’s heading to).

In the clip, Wayne promises to grant fans a look at what his life is like as he prepares to go to jail.

Shot Saturday afternoon in the guest house of his Miami home, Wayne had the NCAA game of Tennessee vs. Kentucky playing in the background on his big-screen TV.

“This is for my real fans,” Wayne said. “People who wanna know what I be doin’. I’mma let y’all in.”

From there, Wayne, who recently tweeted that he was giving up Twitter, urged his fans to log on and follow him at his page “@liltunechi.”

“I just opened that up,” Weezy said. “I got almost 200,000 followers. I need more followers. I saw Drake had like 400,000 followers. I need more followers than Drake.”

Wayne then gave background on his nickname.

“My nickname is Lil Tune — my grandmother named me that,” he explained. “She’s passed. My grandmother, her name was Mercedes Carter. She named me Lil Tune. We just threw the ‘Chi’ on there. Like Gucci, I say ‘Tunechi!’ ”

The clip ends with Weezy shouting out all his children, their mothers and his own mom.

Wayne will be shooting footage right up until he goes to court on Tuesday — check back with MTV News for more!

Wayne and Scoob Doo recently released the DVD “The Nino Brown Story, Part 2.” It can be found on djscoobdoo.com.

Behind The Scenes Of Estelle’s ‘Freak’ Video

It seems like everyone fell in love with Estelle when her smash hit  “American Boy” invaded the airwaves in 2008: The hipster world loved her, the fashion world loved her and hip-hop world loved her (no thanks to her collaboration with Mr. Kanye West.)

But with love comes pressure—the pressure to keep fans happy, to keep the ball rolling and to come up with a follow-up anthem to “American Boy.” Well, based on the below behind-the-scenes clip taken on the set of her new video, “Freak,” you can say one thing about Estelle 2.0: She’s not playing it safe.

Directed by frequent West collaborator Nabil Elderkin (”Coldest Winter“), the video features a lot of green screen effects, Estelle dressed in full body-paint and the great Canadian M.C. Kardinal Offishall in “A Clockwork Orange mode.”

The song itself, produced by electronic hitmaker David Guetta, is a dirty, glitchy dance-floor filler. You can check it out now over at Estelle’s site.

Check out the video below and keep your peepers peeled for the full “Freak” video, coming soon.

Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne And Lady Gaga: This Week’s Deep Cuts

This week’s adventures in the MTV Newsroom had a lot to do with teams. It seemed like everybody was finding a partner, combining powers and barreling headlong at a common goal. Perhaps everyone suddenly became inspired by the Winter Olympics? Are they fans of WWE Unified Tag Team Champions Big Show and the Miz? Or are people just looking to stay warm during these ridiculous snow storms?

Whatever the case, before you go looking for your own tag-team partner this weekend, check out everything you might have missed this week, and be sure to stay tuned for more opinions, humor, insights and behind-the-scenes awesomeness next week!

» When he announced he would be performing on “Saturday Night Live,” Justin Bieber found himself in the exclusive club of the youngest “SNL” performers of all time.

» All types of teams showed off during the Olympics this week, including some ice dancers who summoned the power of Linkin Park during their routine.

» Not all of this week’s teams were current, as we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice.

» This weekend, the U.S. hockey team will play for gold with the assistance of Kings of Leon and Metallica.

» Meanwhile at Disneyland, Michael Jackson got the opportunity to get back together with an alien named Hooter when “Captain EO” returned to the lineup in Tomorrowland.

» Based on the greatness of the Young Money album, we wondered which posse albums were the greatest of all time. When the votes came in, G-Unit stood at the top.

» Snoop Dogg got back together with the cast of “One Life to Live” for another stunner of a guest spot on the soap.

» Thanks to a friendly pair of gloves, Lady Gaga narrowly managed to avoid being totally naked on the cover of a music magazine.

» Speaking of Gaga, we found out that a lot of people team up with the spirit of Gaga for crazy covers.

» Jennifer Hudson’s fiancé David Otunga joined forces with his own muscles for a killer debut on “WWE NXT.”

» Erykah Badu wanted to get to know Paul McCartney so she could sample a song, and she succeeded using the power of Twitter.

» Conan O’Brien joined up with a monkey, a squirrel and a computer to craft the greatest Twitter feed yet imagined by man or beast.

» Finally, MTV News engineered two team-ups this week, both care of digital producer Rich Sancho. The first brought together Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne for a collaboration, while the second melded Lady Gaga’s “Monster” with Tiger Woods’ apology. They’re both remarkable and should keep you entertained throughout the weekend. Enjoy!

Tyler Grady Isn’t ‘Bitter’ At ‘American Idol’ Judges

But booted contestant wasn’t planning to change for them either: ‘I probably would’ve just stuck to my guns.’
By Katie Byrne

Tyler Grady on “American Idol”

While Tyler Grady made a lasting impression with his retro “American Idol” audition in Boston, he virtually went missing from the stage during Hollywood Week.

That disappearing act might have marked the end for the 20-year-old from Nazareth, Pennsylvania — who was kicked off “Idol” on Thursday along with Ashley Rodriguez, Janell Wheeler and Joe Muñoz. Before he reprised his performance of the Guess Who’s “American Woman,” he had some choice words for the judges: “I like all the judges, and I’ve really had a great time with them, but I feel like I didn’t really get much constructive criticism during Hollywood Week, and what they told me was a little too late.”

When we caught up with him Friday (February 26), Grady defended those controversial comments and his ’70s-rocker style.

Q: A lot of “Idol” watchers thought you were out of line to call out the judges during the results show. Do you regret those comments?

A: I’ve seen that I’m getting some heat in the media about my comment before the show ended, and I just wanted to let everyone know that I really meant no disrespect by that. When I watched the show back on Wednesday, I felt that I was too caught up in the moment to stand up for myself, whereas contestants are absolutely encouraged to express themselves when they’re being critiqued, I felt like I was kind of shocked with the criticism, and I just didn’t get the chance to express my feelings, so when I said that, I was just expressing myself. I meant no disrespect. And I’m not bitter at the judges or anything like that. If I would’ve made it through to another week, it would’ve been due to a fanbase that appreciated what I was doing, so I probably would’ve just stuck to my guns and performed in the same style I’ve been performing in. I may have chosen a more recent rock song, but you wouldn’t have seen me coming out in baggy jeans and wearing a headset microphone. I wouldn’t have been changing my performance style at all.

Q: So you wouldn’t have take the judges’ words to heart?

A: I definitely respect the judges, and I think that they’re very qualified to be critiquing the contestants on the show, but at the same time, when you are building a fanbase and your fans are supporting you, they’re supporting you because of what you’re doing, so you can’t turn on your fans. You can’t change up what you’re doing to the point where you irritate your fans. If they’re supporting you, you need to give them what they want and support them back.

Q: How would you be able to tell what your fans want while you’re in the bubble of the show?

A: Essentially, if I would’ve gotten through another week, I think it would’ve been fair to assume that my fans appreciated my style of performance, because I’ve been consistent from the Boston audition to now. And if you see my band play ever, that’s exactly the style of performance I give every time. In response to Ellen’s critique of my lack of honesty and charisma onstage, I do absolutely respect her as an entertainer and as a critic, but I feel like she kind of misrepresented me there.

Q: Do you think your lack of screen time during Hollywood Week hurt you?

A: I don’t want to make excuses. I know that the media is already claiming I’m making excuses, as far as blaming the judges for what happened on the show, and I don’t blame the judges at all. When I made that comment, I was simply expressing my feelings at the time. As a contestant on that show, you need to stand up for yourself and go out with some dignity, but I really don’t make any excuses for what happened. I mean, Kelly Clarkson and Kris Allen, both winners of “American Idol” in the past, didn’t have that much airtime going into the live show, so I wouldn’t say that that would’ve affected the results.

Q: Do you think your stick-by-my-guns attitude is what got you eliminated?

A: I can’t explain to you why I was eliminated. Well, actually, I can explain to you why I was eliminated: I didn’t get enough votes. I got one of the least number of votes out of the 12 guys; that’s why I got eliminated. As a performer, you have to stick to your guns. You have to be honest and true to yourself. If you’re gonna change your style … and be inconsistent, you won’t be able to build a solid fanbase, because people won’t be able to catch on to you. And once you build a fanbase, you need to feed them what they appreciate about you. You can’t constantly change yourself, or you’re not really respecting your fans.

The Maine Are Looking To Rock America’s Greenest School

It’s been a while since we heard from The Maine. They haven’t called, bought us flowers or taken us dancing in a really long time.

However, just when we were about to delete them from our buddy list, we learned that the Arizona-based band has been busy partnering with IC Bus for the second-annual America’s Greenest Schools contest, which is hunting to find the most environmentally conscious school in the country.

The winning school will get a hybrid-powered bus, a green makeover and a scholarship. Plus, they’ll also get a free concert from The Maine. (Cue screaming teenage girls!)

30 Seconds To Mars Call ‘Kings And Queens’ Video ‘A Bit Of A Dream’ In ‘Frame By Frame’

In our continuing efforts to take you — the loyal music lover — deeper into the minds of today’s artists, MTV News presents “Frame by Frame.” Each week, we’ll get a musician to give you the inside scoop on their latest music video.

By Matt Harper

Last week, we showed you an inside look at the first half of 30 Seconds to Mars’ epic video for “Kings and Queens.” We now present the conclusion of the video with insight from band members Jared Leto and Tomo Milicevic.

The band’s other videos have taken us around the world, from China to the Arctic. And while “Kings and Queens” is certainly less international in scope, it is no less grand or cinematic.

“In the song, there’s a feeling of atmosphere. It’s a bit of a dream,” Leto says. Soon after he makes that observation, a lone horse appears in the video, running down a Los Angeles street in slow motion. Clearly we are dealing with a surreal and fantastic vision of downtown L.A.

Of course, Leto then goes on to explain that despite the horse doing a great job in the end, they were really worried about not being able to get the take right. “We only had three takes that we had time to do,” Leto recounted. “The first take it went sideways, second take it went the other way. Third take? Perfect.”

Despite the minor stress caused by the horse, it sounds like the video was fun to make, and that Leto (who directed under the pseudonym “Bartholomew Cubbins”) considers the project an accomplishment. “It was exciting to have ownership of these public spaces … to reclaim ownership, and to ride down both sides of the street.”

And as “Kings and Queens” comes to a close, we see the group of bikers make their way onto Santa Monica Pier as the sun rises — suitably epic conclusion to an impressive video.
